| 1 | CC23.0000.0073 | artworks (art) | Ghost Forests, Song | Thelma Jarvis Peterson | Artist statement: My ancestors have lived on the Chesapeake Bay for almost four centuries as farmers, watermen, boat builders, seafood merchants, and captains of many vessels, including the Old Bay Line steamboats. Raised with three brothers on these same waters, in wooden boats built by our father and grandfather, our childhood naturally instilled in us a deep respect for the Bay and our heritage. We worked together as a family preparing and harvesting the bounty of the waters from those wooden boats; self-reliance and an independent nature were fused into our character.

This family heritage and tradition still exists today along the Chesapeake Bay, despite facing many new challenges. The health of the Bay and rising sea level are impacting vital elements of this community’s way of life. My hope is that these important cultural traditions continue to thrive, and enhance lives for generations to come.

Thelma Jarvis Peterson
http://thelmapeterson.com/
Machipongo, Virginia | ![]() | View | |||
